Environmental & Innovative Ships of the Year Competitions

In 2008, Conservation International and SW Associates were contracted by Royal Caribbean to analyze the results of their Environmental Ship of the Year (ESOY) and Innovative Ship of the Year (ISOY) competitions.

For the ESOY, we selected the top seven RCL ships (from 21) and top 3 Celebrity ships (from 8) based on RCL’s combined audit and public health scores. We determined the top 3 RCL ships and top 2 Celebrity ships based on reviews of the updated score sheets. This was followed by a review of the total documentation for these 5 ships according to a uniform process that included qualitative judgments of the ships’ environmental performance.

For the ISOY, we analyzed separate applications from a number of ships and, with a committee from the Center for Environmental Leadership in Business and Conservation International, we provided recommendations for the ISOY of each line.

Results:

Environmental Ships of the Year were announced for both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruise Lines.
Innovative Ships of the Year were also announced.
